Subject: ADPCM-Question
As far as I remember VFW does install same kind of new soundrec.exe. The
main difference to the old one (the original from windows 3.1(1)) is that
it supports the ACM (audio compression manager). So you can record and
play back sound with ADPCM (or any other kind of installed compression
algorithm). What I don`t know is, if gravis' GUS-Max installs
drivers that do support the hardware compression (using the CODEC-chip).
Anyway, software just works fine ! If your SoundRec.exe doesn't allow
you to choose any compression (in the file-new dialog) try looking at
FTP.MICROSOFT.COM, somewhere in a developer-directory is this utility.
By the way, there is also VFW1.1e! (don't know if it's any better)

Has anyone managed to get the sounds working properly with this thing?
What I get are digital sounds that sometimes get cut off, or don't play
at all. I think the program is also supposed to mix multiple fx
channels, but this doesn't work either.

Subject: Disappointed w/ GUS & support.
I have a Gravis Ultrasound MAX and an SB-PRO in my 486dx2/66
computer...
Yesterday I was messing around with a few of my games to see how each
card sounded. I was expecting to laugh at the SB-PRO and get a warm,
fuzzy
feeling from my far superior GUS. NOPE.
These are the games I've tried and the results. I am referring to the
digital effects on both cards, not music.
Dark Forces SB-PRO Runs FASTER, sounds about the same or
better.
Doom v1.666 Same as above
Doom II v1.666 Same as above
Heretic SB-PRO Runs FASTER, sounds MUCH better than GUS.
Doom v1.2 GUS runs FASTER, and sounds better.
Gee what an upgrade DOOM v1.666 is eh?
Umm, as you might have guessed, I am extremely disappointed. The
conclusion is of course, the GUS is NOT being supported correctly.
Instead of taking advantage of the unique abilities of the GUS,
it is basically being treated as a Sound Blaster! The samples
are being mixed via software, and fed to the GUS, instead of
preloading
the samples in the GUS RAM, and just triggering them. If they were
doing the second method, not only would it sound better than SB, it
would be MUCH faster. Doom v1.2 demonstrates this.
I set all these games to use GUS as MIDI and Sound Blaster for the
digital effects. So basically what I'm getting out of the GUS for
games
is a crappy MIDI board. We all know it is not, though.
Any chance these sound coders will start using the CODEC in the GUS-
MAX
to speed up the lame method they are using? Or how about using the
GUS
how it's supposed to be used?
Also, why does Dark Forces disable the line-in on my GUS?
If it wasn't for the awesome trackers out there that support the GUS,
I would SCRAP this card in a second, and get an AWE32 or something.

Hi,
I've got a demo-version of the new LucasArts adventure Full Throttle.
Looks great ! And sounds.... well, it doesn't... No Gus support
included. :(
Does anyone know if the release version will contain GUS support ?
I sure hope so. It just looks great.
When I find the E-mail address of LucasArts I send them a message
that I won't buy their game if it hasn't GUS-support. It would be a
shame. I really like their adventure games.
By the way, the new megaem doesn't work for me in this case (and most
other cases). I've got a pre-v3.xx release board. :(

Subject: GUS, Win95 and KQ7
Hi,
Has anyone got Kings Quest VII working with the GUS in Windows 95? The
GUS works fine in Windows 95 (with both the 5.47 and 5.50 drivers). The
hardware test of KQ7 gives no problems either; everything checks out
fine (digital and MIDI sound). But when starting the game, I get all
sorts of 'MMMxxxx' errors and finally I get a 'program performed a
illegal operation'- message. After that, the system crashes and I have
to press the reset button. So can anyone give me some info about this?
Thanx in advance.
Greetz,
Jerry

That is indeed a good method but due to (various) circumstances it may
not be possible for everyone wishing to convert files to be able to
physically connect both machines together. The original poster had a CD32
and a PC. I did not think he had the capability to link the two machines,
although I may have been wrong.

Even MaxSBOS works on my Ultrasound (newish).

You have weird logic, my friend. The driver is a BETA. It is released so that
maybe we can beta-test it. If we get all the bugs ironed out, then the
Ultrasound will be compatible with 99% of games and have much better sound than
the Creative efforts. Surely this is what we want?
Not all major games producers are writing Ultrasound drivers, hence MegaEm is a
VERY important product.

I am a happy GUS MAX (1 meg) owner, and I am considering
installing OS/2 WARP on my system. How well does warp run with

os/2 without any problems? Do windows 3.11 midi programs work
under warp+gus max? BTW I have a Zeos Pantera/90. Please

Subject: Need help with CDROM, GUS, and WIndows
I have just installed a Toshiba 5302B CD-ROM in my PC and have cabled the audio
out from the CD-ROM to JP7 on my GUS. I can now play audio CDs while I am in DOS!
The CD-ROM/GUS combination works fine for all of the Windows multimedia programs
that I have tried. The only question that I have is how can I play audio CDs
when I am in Windows? I have tried to use A-B-CD but it doesn't see the CD-ROM.
Also what do I have to do to the GUS for the audio pass through while in windows?
Any help can be sent to mailing list or directly e-mailed to me at schumgl@network.com
Thanks

Subject: No MIDI in Windows - No sounds for Dark Forces.
A friend of mine also has problems getting MIDI to work in windows. He
had the 2.0x version of the software and decided to upgrade to the
3.5x software, and could get NO MIDI, WAVs play OK. DOS MIDI and WAVs
work. We even checked the ULTRASND.INI (only 1 on the hard drive).
So he went back and reinstalled the old version 2.0x (?) of the
software and everything works.
The reason he tried to upgrade was that he gets no sounds or music in
Dark Forces. The setup recognizes digital sounds, but doesn't play any
music. When he starts DF no sounds work at all.
He has one of those motherboards that gives him a parity error with
16-bit DMAs when using the GUS.
If you can help, email him at 'elee@hsc.usc.edu' or post to this
digest.
Thanks,
Dong-Kinh

I do get startup sounds, and I can play mod, mid, wav files or whatever.
When I look at the driver list in the control panel the Ultrasound drivers
are there, and they are also there in the Sound Mapper, but when I check the
Midi mapper the old Gamewave files are there, and I can't seem to be able to
change them to the GUS. I also tried what you mentioned about the setup in
Recording session but that did'nt work either. Thanks for the advice anyway.
Maybe someone else can help me?
Damian.

I sent this posting last Friday, but for some reason it never made it
into the digest. Here it is again....................
I have uploaded the latest Warcraft patch (v1.21) to epas. This version
fixes GUS support that was broken in the v1.20 patch release. This patch
will work for both the CD and floppy versions of Warcraft. Along with
bug fixes, the patch contains a readme with cheat codes and it also comes
with a game editor. It definitly is worth getting!!
The file is called warcr121.zip. Unzip it in your warcraft directory and
type "go". You will be instructed from there.

Subject: SB16 + GUS + MIDI keyboard in Windows = Lock-Up!!!
I had recently been trying to get the GUS and the SB16 to live together in
the same machine. I succeeded with much help from other Netters. I can use
the GUS for MIDI music and the SB16 for sound effect and speech for most of
my games. I can even use the two together in Windows. I can record my
GUS's MIDI music to an SB16 WAV file. No probs there anymore.
Now, I tried to hook up my Roland PC-200mkII MIDI controller keyboard after
having put it away for a while to get other things set up right. I thought
for sure that it wouldn't give me any problems. BUT...when in Windows,
simply touching a key while the keyboard is on and plugged in the GUS locks
up Windows but good! I can't reboot. I have to turn the whole thing right
off. I can use the keyboard in DOS though. It's just Windows that gives me
the problems.
Maybe I did something in one of my .INI files? I dunno. I have the cards
set as:
SB16 220(address)5(IRQ) 1(lowDMA) 5(highDMA) 300(MIDIport) t6
GUS 210(address) 7(playDMA) 7(recordDMA) 11(GF1IRQ) 7(MIDI/SB IRQ)
What could the problem be?
INIs?
Hardware setups? Conflicts?
Software setups? Conflicts?
Moon misaligned with Jupiter?
Any help would be absolutely, gratefully, positively, enormously, spam,
truly, most extraordinarily appreciated.
